4 Ways to Use Big Data Analytics to Revolutionize India in 2019
By Saheli Roy Chowdhuri
The strength in numbers
India’s population is expected to become 1.37 billion in 2019. Being one of the biggest countries in terms of manpower, we are a nation of strength in numbers. Ironically, it’s our weakness too.
Overpopulated cities, water and food crisis, and lack of basic health facilities are keeping us from realizing our power in numbers. Can technology show us the way? Can big data analytics be the answer to our big population issues?
Big data analytics on the rise
India’s data analytics market is also growing at an unprecedented rate. The industry in India is expected to almost double by 2020. Indian private and public organisations are increasingly leveraging analytics’ ability to boost efficiency in operations, production, cost management as well as chalk innovative strategies to take the nation forward.
Let’s look at 4 ways we can use big data to revolutionize India for good
1. Big data + big population = Big solution
India is an ideal candidate for big data analytics. Even the smallest of statistical data in India is so large, that if one employs data analytics to gain insights, it can have revolutionary outcomes. For instance, using the meteorological data of Monsoon season collected over years to predict rainfall for farmers or using predictive models based on demographics to reduce school dropout rates.
“Big data analytics can solve persistent socio-economic problems in India like farmer suicide cases, resource scarcity and illiteracy.”
2. Big data techniques used for agriculture
India depends on unreliable Monsoon forecasts for agriculture. Every year, Indian farmers are forced to rely on their hunch or inadequate weather forecast on when to pick the plough.
Over 638,000 villages with 130 million farmers are cultivating 3000 different varieties of crops. Big data scientist’s role in predicting local weather forecast for every geographical region in India with accuracy can be a game changer in such farming.
Equipping farmers with better weather forecast along with knowledge about seeds, farming practices and market dynamics like crop rates can revolutionize agriculture.
3. Using predictive models to reduce school dropout rates
Predictive models along with AI can help education institutes track student’s progress and reduce dropout rates. Microsoft, in a recent literacy project carried out in schools in Andra Pradesh, used data from 100,000 students to predict drop-out ratios. The tech giant used 100 different parameters to draw analytical insights on how dropouts can be reduced.
4. Make waves in the telemedicine sector
Don’t you turn to your smart phone to find your doctor or cross check his prescription online?
“A recent Meeker Report shows that 48% millennials, 38% Generation X and 23% baby boomers go online to find a physician.”
A vast trove of digital health data is creating opportunities for revolutionary insights in telemedicine. The doctor’s ability to predict, personalize, and prevent patient outcomes remotely, armed with data analytics is improving treatment affordability and accessibility.
Data Analytics is also termed as the hottest job of 2019
According to industry trends, Data Science is going to lead the job market as the most in demand skill for the industry. The salaries for professionals trained in new technologies are on a rise due to the talent shortfall for data scientists. A survey by PayScale reveals that the average salary for a Data Scientist in India is INR 6,70,665.
Take that matter in your own hands with data
The vastness of data science applications enables professionals from different fields to choose data science as a profession. So, pursue a renowned data science course and help solve the root problems prevailing in India.
