Businesses cannot thrive without generating insights from raw data and incorporating them to further the organization’s growth. This is where the data scientists come in. These professionals are experts at unfurling the most complicated data and deriving insights from them through data analysis.
Keeping in mind the challenges that data scientists are likely to face, Manipal ProLearn organized a hackathon in the area of data analytics in September for its full-time students of PG Diploma in Data Science. The aim of the hackathon was to identify the ability of participants in solving data analysis problems using tools such as R/Python.
Our students all geared up for the hackathon.
The participants were split into 16 groups consisting of five members each and were randomly assigned a problem statement. They were given three hours to analyse and solve it. The aim was to get the students to apply the concepts they had learned during the first term of their data science program to solve the problem effectively.
The datasets provided to the participants pertained to different categories such as employee attrition, political data of the Congress party, historical data, movies and so on. It helped the participants experience a range of challenges that they may face during the actual data analysis process. To solve the problems given to them, the participants applied the concepts of exploratory data analytics, statistical modeling techniques and data visualization techniques that they were extensively trained in during the first term of their course.
Upon completion of this project, a report of their analysis was presented to a panel of subject-matter experts who selected the best report.

The results obtained from the reports were impressive. The most interesting insights were derived from the analysis of the employee attrition dataset, which revealed that:
- Sales and HR departments had higher attrition rates than other departments in the organization.
- Employees who were single were more likely to quit their current job.
- Employees who worked overtime had higher chances of quitting.
- Employees at the lower level in the hierarchy were more susceptible to quitting.
- Higher the educational qualification, lesser the chances of quitting.
- Employees who had worked in five or more organizations were more likely to quit their current job.
Other data sets also resulted in some insightful derivations after the analysis. The subject matter experts and the participants were all thoroughly impressed with the information derived from the available data.

At Manipal ProLearn’s Data Science Hackathon 2017, our students identified the areas and techniques that they had to improve upon to emerge as better data scientists. This hackathon was a testimony that our programs go beyond the horizon of mere classroom training to provide wholesome training to our students, preparing them for a promising career in data science.
